sex work - lock down. collected fragments from a world that is often made invisible

Project by Helena Lea Manhartsberger

Student project + exhibition

2021

In her project sex work - lock down. collected fragments from a world that is often made invisible, GCSD student Helena Lea Manhartsberger deals with the topic of sex work in times of COVID-19 in Austria.

Together with her protagonists, through diverse media and materials Helena addresses the challenges of the current situation and shows various strategies that people in this industry have found to get through the pandemic. Sex workers, operators, customers, social workers, and activists share their experiences and give diverse insights into the topic. Intimate portraits, images of places and objects as well as interviews give an impression of this challenging time, marked by lockdowns, distance rules and occupational bans, for the most bodily of all activities.

An exhibition at Reich für die Insel, Innsbruck, shows the project until 8th December, 2021. A book with photographs and texts will also be published.
