Moving Squares – Plaza Dance

A project created in the course of the exhibition: Distant Echoes: Experiences of Living Away from Home by Famkje Marijka Elgersma

The music between the buildings magnetically attracts people. The source of these melodies can be found in an otherwise lifeless square, which has been transformed into a vibrant stage by dancing people.

Like brushstrokes on a canvas, their actions and interactions make the square something worth seeing and experiencing.

Throughout China, these so-called square dances take place, mainly performed by older generations. They serve physical and mental fitness and have a remarkable impact on public life. It's the people who bring life to dead space.
